The Klingon Empire's Space Fleet
The Klingon Empire suffered more than any other power during the Dominion war, losing some two thirds of their entire fleet. The reasons for this are partly tactical. For some time toward the end of the war, the Federation and Romulan fleets were forced to disengage due to the Breen energy draining weapon, and the Klingons bore the weight of the fighting alone. In addition to this burden, the Klingon chancellor, Gowron, chose to make a number of unadvised attacks during this period which led to the needless loss of many ships.
However, these factors are only part of the answer. The real reason why the Klingon losses were so high lies in their cultural imperatives. While the Federation and Romulans tend to approach battle as a means to accomplish given tactical and strategic ends, Klingons generally view battle as an opportunity to vindicate their sense of personal worth. As a result, they have a tendency to launch attacks in situations where their allies would retreat to fight another day. Once engaged, Klingons will also tend to be highly reluctant to withdraw should the situation turn against them, regarding this as a great loss of face.
The Klingons have nevertheless taken their performance during the war as a vindication of their military policies. Historically, they have had a well-balanced fleet comprised of both smaller scout-type vessels and larger battlecruisers and battleships. Like the Federation, they maintain a mixture of both long-serving and well-proven designs, and newer, more advanced vessels. As a result, they are likely to continue this model when rebuilding their forces over the next few years.
There is one very large difference between the Klingons and the Federation. The Klingon Empire's economic system prevents them from spending large amounts of resources on researching and designing new ship classes and weapons as often as the Federation does. This means that the Klingon Empire has fewer types and classes of ships in service, compared to the Federation; however, that doesn't mean that there are significantly fewer ships overall in the Klingons' fleet. The Klingon Empire's space fleet is currently comprised of between 2,000 and 4,000 ships, of perhaps no more than 14 classes. The Federation fleet contains 40 known classes, and roughly the same total number of active ships in its fleet as the Klingon Empire has. Comparisons between the total number of ships in the Klingon and Federation fleets reveal that their fleet strengths are nearly equal, varying by perhaps only 1,000 total ships, regardless of the significant difference in the variety of ship classes.
On average, the Klingon fleet contains more of the smaller light cruiser and strike cruiser types of ships than the larger heavier types of ships. It is estimated that there are two to three times more light cruiser and strike cruiser classes, with a proportional number of actual member ships of those classes within the Klingon fleet. This is probably because of the greater cost of producing the larger ship classes.
